Chapter twenty

We trudged back up the hill to the Lt, Blue, Green and rest of Yellow.

They all just looked at us as we arrived.

The Lt nodded as she took in a deep breath, “Well, clearly the Cren are here. We still have our mission, to find them, we’ve done that. . . and engage where we can. We’ve done that, too.”

She paused to scan all of us, our stance, our posture, our wet armor and to see how we looked.

I was doing the same. The trouble with Yellow, of course, is that we’ve been here before. They all just looked tired and a little bored.

They knew the next steps and were waiting for Lt or me to announce it.

We’d come back to kill Cren. They were on the other side of this hill and just over five kilometers.

We could do that in a couple of hours with our packs and bandoleers of power packs.

Lt was still processing next steps. I get that. She is young and new. And, she is also smart.

I offered directly, “We don’t have an easy way home, so we might as well take the fight to them.”

That opened a deluge of comment from the rest of Blue and Green. It made sense, they’d been hit the hardest starting with the loss of Enwal and the Med-Tech the day everyone arrived.

And it had gone down-hill from there, including the loss of our captain.

But we were still warriors and none of this discussion would change that. We just had to cycle through it to get everyone out to the point they realized we needed to head east.

I instinctively snapped a look up at the sky and they all did as well.

I hadn’t intended for them to do that, but it gave me the opening I needed, “We can stand here and discuss this, or head east to take on the Cren in their base. We certainly can’t stay here any longer. They know warriors are here and will expect us to try and stay hidden in the ravines.”

I paused for a moment to take in a breath, “Instead, we take the fight to them. Our attack would be unexpected.”

Alright. . . I got it out in the open.

One of the warriors from Green scoffed at that, “Take the fight to them? We’ve lost warriors. We barely survived the last fight. We need reinforcements. How are we going to take the fight to them?”

The Lt stepped into the discussion, “The sergeant is right. We can’t stay here, they know we are here. The question is which way we go. Our orders are clear - engage the Cren.”

I was tired and my back ached so I stretched it out, arching it to relieve the discomfort.

As I was doing that, another Blue warrior added, “Lt, all respect, sir, but there are hundreds, maybe thousands of soldiers there. And we’re going to take them on? They keep bringing in more and more troops. The only way we can win is if we stop them from loading up and transporting them out.
